What Pipe Supports Do

An insulated pipe support is the rigid insert that goes where your insulated line meets a hanger, stand, roller, or guide. It carries the weight without letting the surrounding insulation get pinched, so your system keeps both its load path and its thermal seal.

Get it wrong and you’ll see it later: crushed insulation, a punctured jacket, sweating lines, and corrosion under insulation at every hanger. Get it right and the supports disappear into a system that just works.

How Pipe Supports Have Evolved

Supports used to be simple, and not in a good way. The old approach was a wood block or a cork dowel pushed through the insulation at the hanger.

In commercial systems, fiberglass insulation is still the most common, and the trade moved on to rigid foam inserts that insulate and carry load at the same time. Today we work in polyiso, phenolic, calcium silicate, and foam glass for support inserts. The right one depends on whether the line runs hot or cold and how much weight it has to hold.

Materials We Fabricate Supports From

We match the insert to the service, not the other way around:

  • Calcium silicate. High compressive strength for hot piping. The stronger the insert, the shorter the support can be for a given load.
  • Polyiso and phenolic. Rigid foam for cold and chilled-water lines that need moisture resistance and load capacity together.
  • Foam glass. Closed-cell and load-bearing, good across a wide temperature range including cold service.
  • High-density TumTUFF®. Our answer to the toughest pinch points, covered below.

Hanging Pipe Supports vs. Pipe on Stands

Most insulated lines are hung from a clevis hanger off the structural steel, and that’s the easy case. With hanging pipe supports, a higher-density insert under the clevis disperses the weight of the system across the support so nothing crushes.

The problem shows up when piping is set on stands. A round pipe resting on a flat surface concentrates all that weight at one narrow pinch point. On large-bore piping, conventional insulation supports can’t hold up there, and they fail.
